xpectant parents Yukari Abe and Ricardo Durand had planned to get married Friday, Aug. 11, before their child was born in late August. Then fate intervened.

Ms. Abe went into labor Aug. 8 and was admitted to Santa Monica-UCLA Medical Center. The wedding appeared to be off.

But thanks to the ingenuity of Labor and Delivery nurse Marijke Collins and her co-workers, the couple was able to tie the knot before cutting the cord after all.

Marijke approached Rabbi Sara Berman, formerly of our Chaplaincy department, who agreed to marry the couple during a bedside ceremony in their L & D room later that day. Several nurses, the couple’s physician, Dr. Heather Kettenis, and the chaplain’s six-year-old daughter, Miriam, witnessed the ceremony.

L & D staff members created a makeshift bouquet for the bride out of blue and white tissue paper. Surgical technician Nori Gamewell was designated the ring bearer, while Central Service’s Kevin Roberson was recruited to be best man. There also was cake for the happy couple to enjoy following the ceremony. Charge nurse Barbara Abrams served as wedding photographer.

Neither Barbara nor Marijke could remember anything quite like it during their careers in maternity nursing. “It was a touching ceremony and we felt proud to stand in as their extended family,” Marijke said.

Ms. Abe continued in labor through the rest of the evening. At 8:19 a.m. the next day, she delivered a healthy baby girl, Natjedah, who weighed in at 6 pounds, 1 ounce. Mother, father and baby were honeymooning at home in Santa Monica by Friday afternoon.

It’s a Wash! And the winners of the first-ever “Battle of the Sexes Blood Drive” at SM-UCLA were… the men! Seven percent of our male employees donated blood at the July 24 event, versus 6.5 percent of female employees, making winners of team captains Dr. Mike Herbst and Vernon Goodwin. Their cars will be washed by female captains Shelean Antoine and Chelsi Glasemen, with additional elbow grease from SM-UCLA CAO Posie Carpenter and other members of the Administration team. The car wash is scheduled for Friday, Sept. 8, at 1 p.m., near the main entrance. Thanks to all employees who donated for their respective teams. Overall, we collected 72 units, making patients the real winners in this friendly competition.

Where Are They Now? Cath Lab personnel and staff cardiologists are now sharing the recently remodeled Angiography suite with Radiology while renovation occurs on our existing Cath Lab. Please note that the Angiography suite is located in Room 4 of the Radiology department on 2 Tower. The Cath Lab’s telephone ext. remains 93300.

Numbers Game. Is 15 your lucky number? On Nov. 15, all Pavilion floors and rooms will be given new numbers as part of the MNP Renumbering Project. On Nov. 15, the stickers will be removed to unveil the new floor and room numbers. For more information, email Amy Wills in Transition Planning.
