December 2006

ith the arrival of the holidays, many departments are decorating their work areas to look and feel more festive. Doing so is perfectly fine, even encouraged, as long as you follow some basic guidelines distributed by our Safety Department. Please review the guidelines noted below:

Trees. Cut, natural trees are not permitted in our buildings, except for the main lobbies and Café Santa Monica, where the trees are monitored daily. Live, potted trees can be used if they are watered and kept moist. If the trees become dry at any point, they must be discarded immediately.

Electrical cords / lights. Do not use electrical cords that are frayed or worn, and never put them under rugs, drapes or furniture because they can ignite combustible materials. Holiday lights are not allowed in patient-care areas.

Candles, open flames. Candles or open-flame devices, including incense, are not allowed in any part of our medical center.

Decorations. Decorative items may not hang from life-safety equipment such as fire extinguishers, sprinkler heads, smoke detectors or automatic-door closures. They also cannot be placed in entry or exit routes or block corridors.

Always maintain good housekeeping practices to help minimize clutter. Remove and discard any ribbons, paper and boxes before they become fire hazards.

For more information about safety during the holiday season, refer to Policy # HS 8409, “Holiday Decorations,” or email Erik “Grinch” Eggins or Victor “Scrooge” Kennedy.

SM-UCLA’s Threat Team, which meets monthly, and the UCPD Crime Prevention Unit also want to remind you of some important safety pointers to remember over the holidays and throughout the year …

  • Don’t drink and drive. The combination can be deadly. When partying, keep the phone number for a taxi service nearby and use it, if needed, or appoint a designated driver.
  • Be alert to your surroundings and the people nearby, especially when it’s dark, you are alone or using an ATM.
  • Travel with a friend, whenever possible, and avoid dark or secluded places.
  • When walking to your car, have your keys in hand and get in quickly after opening the door. Always check the back seat before entering.
  • If you think you’re being followed, do not go home. Drive to the nearest police or fire station or a well-lit area.

October Financials. October was another good month for our hospital, which posted a bottom line of $280,000. To date, our hospital is more than $1.5 million ahead of budget and about $500,000 ahead of last fiscal year's results.

At a Premium. Don't forget that the 2007 premiums for health insurance will be deducted from your December 13 paycheck, even though changes made during Open Enrollment do not take effect until January 1. That's because we pay in advance for our health coverage.

Deductive Reasoning. Although new health-insurance rates kick in on Dec. 13, the sting will be offset by a "deduction holiday" on the first payday in January --
Jan. 10. That means a break from elective deductions -- parking, health-insurance premiums, loan deductions -- on your paycheck. Enjoy your extra bucks!

Meaningful Holiday Cards. Looking for the perfect holiday card this season? Look no farther than the SM-UCLA Gift Shop, where you can purchase the 2006 Holiday Card Collection benefiting the Mattel Children's Hospital at UCLA. Unique cards designed by pediatric patients at the Westwood campus, as well as a special Barbie card, send a message of hope and healing. Proceeds from the cards will help support special programs for hospitalized children and their families. Stop by our Gift Shop today to purchase the cards and many other holiday items.

Holiday Blood Drive. 'Tis the season for giving and what better gift than a blood donation to help save someone's life? The UCLA Blood and Platelet Center will host a Holiday Blood Drive at SM-UCLA on Monday, Dec. 18, 8 a.m. to 1 p.m., in Room 723. All donors will receive a commuter mug. For appointment information, click on the accompanying file.

Electronic W-2s. Payroll Services has announced a new service that allows you to receive electronic W-2s, rather than waiting for them to arrive by mail. The electronic W-2 is an IRS-compliant image and displays the same information in the same format as the paper version. An additional feature allows you to download your W-2 information into any of six commercially sold tax-preparation software programs such as TurboTax. You must sign up to receive electronic W-2s. For more information, click on the following link to "At Your Service On-Line", sign in, then click on W-2 and Select Delivery Method. The deadline for choosing a 2006 electronic W-2 is January 1, 2007.

Holiday Meal. The annual Holiday Meal for SM-UCLA employees and volunteers will be served on Wednesday, Dec. 20, from 11:30 a.m. to 2 p.m., in Café Santa Monica. Lois Horne and her Food Services staff will be preparing a delicious holiday feast to help our hospital say "thanks" for your hard work throughout the year. This year, a meal for night-shift staff also will be served in Café Santa Monica on Tuesday, Dec. 19. To view the menu, click on the file below. Meal tickets will be distributed to all departments in mid-December. Please note that if you are unable to partake in either meal, you can use your ticket on another day through Jan. 14, 2007.

Sharing the Holidays. All departments are encouraged to help brighten the holidays for less-fortunate members of our community by participating in UCLA Healthcare's "Adopt-a-Family" program. This holiday project matches adopting departments with needy patients and their families, ranging in size from two to nine people. To arrange an adoption or for more information, email Helen Levin in the UCLA Medical Center Auxiliary.

Taking Your Shots. Have you had your flu shot yet? Employee Health still has flu vaccines available and interested employees are encouraged to stop by the Employee Health Office on 9 Tower to get vaccinated for the coming flu season. For office hours or to arrange a special appointment, call ext. 94814.

Renumbering Review. Please do not remove, write on or deface the temporary signage posted throughout the Pavilion as part of our Renumbering Project. In mid-December, more complete, permanent signage will be installed to help direct patients, visitors and staff members. Additionally, Transition Planning will be forming a committee to address signage issues related to the renumbering. If you are interested in being part of the group, email Amy Wills or Barbara Friedman in Transition Planning.

Visitor Parking. Help spread the word that SM-UCLA now offers visitor parking in the Arizona Structure during evening and weekend hours as part of our overall Customer Service initiative. Visitors can stop at the Security desk to purchase a $5 access ticket, which allows entry to the structure at the times noted below:

Weekdays: 6:30 p.m. to 6 a.m.
Weekends: All day
Holidays: All day

Please remind visitors that failure to comply with the guidelines given by Security can result in parking citations. Questions can be emailed to Security Manager Vernon Goodwin.

Massage Therapy. Move over, Burke-Williams, because SM-UCLA is now offering massages! The fully clothed, chair massages are provided by certified massage therapists and are priced at $15 per 20 minutes for staff members. Patients also can access the service in their rooms or Room 721 ($20 per 20 minutes). Payment must be made in advance at the Cashier's Office on 1 Pavilion. Click on the attached file to print a payment coupon. To schedule a massage or for more information, call ext. 94544.

The Clothes Closet. SM-UCLA needs donations of clothing to give to homeless or needy patients when discharged. Jackets, t-shirts, jeans and bags are especially needed. To make a donation, please email Kristen Zaleski in Social Services or Louise Villalpando in Patient Affairs.
