May 2007

ay might as well be renamed "Employee Recognition Month" at Santa Monica-UCLA Medical Center and Orthopaedic Hospital! During the past couple of years, this month has become synonymous with festivities to recognize our exceptional staff, and this year will be no different.

May 6-12 is both National Nurses' Week and National Hospital Week. What an opportune time to recognize you – our dedicated staff members – who personify this year's slogan: "Care you count on . . . People you trust." We have planned several festivities to celebrate your contributions, including:

  • a Celebration Tea, organized by our Nursing Model of Care Committee to recognize not only Nursing personnel, but staff members from throughout our hospital.
    Wednesday, May 9
    2 to 4 p.m.
    Cafeteria Conference Room B
  • an Employee Service Awards Ceremony, honoring employees who have reached service milestones at our hospital in 2007. This event is invitation-only and Human Resources has already notified honorees and their managers.
    Thursday, May 10
    1 to 2:30 p.m.
    Café Santa Monica
  • a Staff Recognition Reception to thank all staff members for their dedicated service and distribute scholarship and recognition awards sponsored by our Board of Advisors and Executive Medical Board.
    Tuesday, May 15
    2:30 p.m.
    Café Santa Monica
  • a Roving Dessert Cart to ensure our night-shift staff receives its just desserts!
    Tuesday, May 15
    7:30 to 9 p.m.
    All areas

I hope I get to personally thank you during these events. If not, then please accept my heartfelt appreciation for your contributions in making Santa Monica-UCLA Medical Center and Orthopaedic Hospital a vital part of the UCLA Health System!

Sincerely,
Posie Carpenter, RN, MSN, MPH
Chief Administrative Officer

From One David to Another. Dr. David Callender will be leaving his post as Associate Vice Chancellor and CEO for the UCLA Hospital System on June 30 to return to his roots in Texas. Dr. Callender has been named President of the University of Texas Medical Branch in Galveston. "This is one of those rare opportunities in life that allows me and my family to return to our Texas roots, and to serve at an institution that presents a new set of professional challenges," he said. Dr. David Feinberg (photo above) has received an interim appointment as Dr. Callender's successor and will assume his responsibilities. Dr. Feinberg currently serves as Medical Director of the Stewart and Lynda Resnick Neuropsychiatric Hospital on the Westwood campus.

March Financials. SM-UCLA & OH experienced a $550,000 loss in March, compared with a budgeted loss of $470,000. Year to date, our hospital is $270,000 over budget. With only two months left in this fiscal year, all departments must carefully monitor expenses to ensure that we finish FY06-07 at or under budget. Look for a progress report in next month's Update.

Rising Expectations. The long-awaited openings of our new Nethercutt Emergency Center and Laboratory in the new Southwest Wing on 15th Street are still projected for this summer. By mid-May, we should know if our hospital will receive a certificate of occupancy for the building, thereby paving the way for our ER and Lab to move in late July. The Lab will be relocating to a 9,000-square-foot area on the basement level of the building, while the ER will occupy 16,000 square feet on the ground level. Watch for email updates later this month, followed by progress reports in our June newsletter.

Gridlock. C'mon, commuters! All SM-UCLA & OH employees must complete the annual commuter survey required by the South Coast Air Quality Management District. We need a 99 percent completion rate by the end of this week, but as of now, we are under 50 percent. If you have not done so already, please click on this link www.cleanair.ucla.edu and complete a brief questionnaire about your work commute for the week of March 5-11. You will need to enter your employee ID number to take the survey. Results are combined for reporting to the SCAQMD. Questions can be directed to Human Resources at ext. 94845.

Left to right, Mark Dyball, Lois Horne and Lionel Valles display a signature dish now available on our new Room Service menu.

Bon Appetit. Food Services has unveiled its new Room Service menu, featuring premium appetizers, salads and entrees more typically served at five-star hotels than hospitals. The upgraded menu features such items as pan-seared sea bass and salmon, eggplant parmigiana, chicken or lamb kabobs and New Zealand lamb chops. Preliminary reviews by our resident food critics our patients have been extremely positive. To view the new Room Service menu, click on this file:

Dollars for Scholars. Congratulations to ten SM-UCLA & OH employees who will be awarded scholarships at the Staff Recognition Reception on May 15. Each employee will receive $250 (after taxes) to help with the cost of pursuing continuing education. The awards are made possible by the generous support of our Board of Advisors and Executive Medical Board. Kudos, scholars:

Pay Check. Human Resources reminds you to review your paycheck every pay period to be sure that your pay and elective deductions are correct. Additionally, you must remember to cancel your parking or other elective deductions when separating from our hospital or transferring to the Westwood campus. Our hospital no longer reimburses employees who fail to cancel their parking and turn in their parking cards and hangtags.

Service Milestones. One hundred SM-UCLA & OH employees who have reached service milestones at our hospital in 2007 will be honored at the Employee Service Awards Ceremony on May 10. The honorees will be recognized for year milestones ranging from 10 to 40 years. Surgery's John Lawson and Nursing's Nora Brierley will be the top honorees with 40 years apiece. Two other employees, Janine Hubalek of Labor and Delivery and Myrtle Stephens of Central Service, will be recognized for 35 years of sterling service. Look for photos and the complete list of honorees in our June Update.

Volunteer Cheer. SM-UCLA & OH saluted its 200-plus volunteers last month by hosting a Volunteer Recognition Luncheon and other festivities in celebration of National Volunteer Week, April 22-28. The April 18 luncheon at the Sheraton Delfina Hotel in Santa Monica recognized 68 volunteers who achieved hour and year milestones at our medical center during the past year. Santa Monica resident Jette Simmons was the top honoree again, with an amazing 74,000 hours of service! She was followed by Kuljit Marwah of Malibu and Ronald Belanger of Venice, with 27,000 and 19,000 hours of service, respectively. The luncheon also paid tribute to the "leading ladies" volunteers Nancy Howell, Lois Krieger, Monique Lasky and Agnes Raeder who manage four hospital areas staffed entirely by volunteers: Gift Shop, Surgery Waiting Area, Ambassador Program and the Information Desk.
